The department teaches general microbiology, immunology, pharmaceutical microbiology, medical microbiology, biotechnology, public health and parasitology courses. The department supervises the teaching of the pathology course, in addition to cooperation in the field of teaching and research activity between the department and some faculties of pharmacy and medicine in public and private universities at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The department aims to establish the basic rules for the student in the science of microbiology and immunology, where the student receives lectures and practical lessons in the foundations of microbiology and immunology. The student studies the course of pharmaceutical microbiology, which includes sterilization methods of their types, characteristics, importance, antimicrobials of all kinds, microbial resistance to them, and methods of evaluation. The student then proceeds to study the medical microbiology course, which deals with the study of the types of infectious microbes, the diseases they cause, methods of their spread, prevention and treatment. The department teaches the biotechnology course, which deals with the foundations and concepts of biotechnology, genetic engineering, fermentation technology, technological products, and biological treatments. The public health course deals with the study of epidemiology concepts, studies related to epidemiology, how to control communicable and non-communicable diseases to prevent their spread and their effects on public health, and the role of nutrition and environmental factors in that. As for parasitology, it deals with single-celled parasites and worms that are pathogenic to humans of various types (flattened, cylindrical, etc.), diseases resulting from infection with these parasites, their symptoms, methods of their spread, insects that transmit them, and others that are pathogenic to humans and methods of controlling them. The department provides consultations and expertise in the fields of general, medical, pharmaceutical and industrial microbiology. The department also provides the necessary technical assistance in the field of quality control and assurance regarding the evaluation of antimicrobials and the microbiological safety of pharmaceutical preparations, which come from outside the faculty or from the advanced pharmaceutical experiments and research unit in the faculty. The department is constantly developing the courses it teaches in line with the rapid development in the field of microbiology. The department also organizes some research projects in which students participate in order to provide them with experience in the field of scientific research.
The department is interested in the following research areas:
- Production of high-value vital compounds from microorganisms.
- Studying the resistance of microorganisms to antimicrobials.
- A study of the mechanism of microbial disease events
- Microbiological control of pharmaceutical preparations
- The department has research laboratories for the following fields:
- Pharmaceutical microbiology.
- Molecular Microbiology.
- Biotechnology.
- Tissue culture.
The department opens its doors for research cooperation with various departments and research agencies.
